The importance of discovery calls for travel advisors

No two travel businesses are the same, which means that not all travel agents and travel professionals will make the same decisions regarding how to run their businesses. That includes discovery calls! Some travel advisors may find that a discovery call is not needed, but many opt to offer a discovery call to potential clients for the following reasons:

  • It is an opportunity to set a first impression and establish yourself as the travel expert

  • Discovery calls can help you establish genuine connections with your clients

  • You can gather crucial details on a call in less time than it might take to gather the same information with back and forth emails

How to prepare for a discovery call – 5 topics to cover

There are five main topics that you will want to cover on a discovery call. Making sure that you are prepared with your own research and suggestions, as well as questions to ask that will help you gather information from the clients, is important.

  1. Flights & logistics in the destination

  2. Typical itinerary/top regions to explore

  3. What type of experiences are available?

  4. Estimates for total investment ranges

  5. Questions you want. to be sure to ask

As you see, “questions to ask” is a topic all of its own for any discovery call! Intentionally asking the right questions will save you loads of time as you go about planning the trip and will help prevent you from having to keep circling back to the client with follow-up questions. (Tune into the replay above to get examples of the questions to ask!)

Undiscovered Sunsets was a long time in the making, even if I myself didn’t realize it. During my time at the University of Northern Iowa, I studied abroad in New Zealand. Upon graduating, I bought a one-way ticket to France, lived with a French family and studied with classmates from Turkey, China, Russia, Germany, Italy, and everywhere in between. In 2010 I began teaching English as a foreign language. This job quickly took me to China, where English teachers were in high demand and within three years, I began working in a 5-star hotel, speaking Mandarin throughout most of my day. In total, I lived abroad for 7 years.

I consider Undiscovered Sunsets to be the perfect mélange of my personal experience traveling the world and my professional experience working in the hospitality industry.

I look forward to designing your next adventure!
